Why We Study Fiqh Before We Study Ourselves
On the wisdom of beginning the Shariah journey with worship and practice — and how the everyday rulings shape the heart long before the mind.
A three-year Shariah program in Lakemba — grounded in the Islamic tradition, built on four core areas: Fiqh, the Sources of Legislation, the Building Blocks of the Effective Muslim, and Islamic History.
Azhar Australia is officially recognised by Dar Al Fatwa Lebanon — established to transmit the sacred sciences as they have been studied for over a millennium. Operating since 2023 adjacent to the historic Lakemba mosque, we serve students seeking a serious, classical education in Islam.
Our program rests on four carefully chosen core areas: Fiqh for everyday practice, the Sources of Legislation for engaging the Islamic sources, the Building Blocks of the Effective Muslim, and a substantial focus on Islamic History & Civilisation — a focus rare among institutions in the West.
See the Program“And say, ‘My Lord, increase me in knowledge.’”
Our Shariah program is built around four core areas — each chosen to serve both an individual and collective purpose, and developed in the methodology of the Azhar tradition.
The subjects most needed in everyday living — religious practice, the exchange of goods and services, and personal relationships including marriage, divorce and inheritance.
Progressively introduces students to how the Jurists (Fuqahā’) engage with the Islamic sources — both the technical details of the field and structured opportunities for practice.
Designed with the developing Muslim in mind. We ask: what makes an amazing Muslim? What tools do they need to operate effectively? How do we empower them to practice what they preach?
Built to promote perspective and to encourage a practical outcome from the study of our history and civilisation — culminating in the third year with the study of Islam in the modern world.
Each year builds on the last. Students may complete the full three years or, after Year One, receive a certificate in Islamic fundamentals.
A solid foundation in the study of Shariah. Students may complete just the first year and receive a certificate in Islamic fundamentals — though continuing for the comprehensive study is encouraged.
Students continue to build on the core areas — delving into transaction Fiqh, applying the Quranic sciences through Tafseer, and progressing through Islamic History from the Prophet ﷺ to the fall of the Uthmānī Khilāfah.
In the third year students explore Islamic sects, engage with significant contemporary topics in Islamic Civilisation, study the Fiqh of personal matters, and bring their study of History to modern times — examining the condition, challenges and opportunities of Islam today.
Run within the Shariah curriculum. Students are mentored in their recitation and taught the rules of Tajweed as they progress in their memorisation. Separate Quran classes for men and women.
A weekly class developed for students of the Shariah program, with a focus on all four language domains: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
To root every student in the foundational sciences of Islam, taught in the order and depth of the Azhar tradition.
Our subjects are chosen for their relevance to everyday Muslim life — worship, transactions, family, character.
Knowledge without ʾadab is incomplete. The Building Blocks of the Effective Muslim runs through every year of study.
From the Sīrah through the great civilisations to Islam in the modern world — perspective is built across three years.
To help our students discover a sense of sublime purpose in their lives, anchored in the tradition they inherit.
Classes are held weekly in Lakemba, with revision and exam weeks closing each semester.
13 weeks of teaching, one revision week, two exam weeks. Public holidays observed; potential Eid break in late May.
13 weeks of teaching, one revision week, two exam weeks. A graduation ceremony for the inaugural Class of 1447H is anticipated.
Our faculty is drawn from Azhar graduates, scholars trained in Lebanon, and teachers from Madinah, India and Australia — each bringing decades of study in the company of their teachers.
Azhar Australia is officially recognised by Dar Al Fatwa Lebanon and built on partnerships with some of the most established religious institutions in the Arab world — relationships that shape our curriculum and accredit the work of our students.
A living map of the empires, dynasties, and scholars that carried the sacred sciences across thirteen centuries — follow the caliphate along its spine, trace the dynasties that rose around it, and open any era or scholar to read further.
On the wisdom of beginning the Shariah journey with worship and practice — and how the everyday rulings shape the heart long before the mind.
A short reflection on what the early Islamic centres of learning can teach a generation studying in the West — perspective, patience and purpose.
One of our inaugural students reflects on twelve months of unhurried study — the discipline, the companionship, and the quiet change it brings.
